Design – Design protection against plagiarism
A registered design protects the exterior form, or rather, the exterior appearance of a two or three-dimensional object, such as a cloth pattern or the look of a watch, a car or a technical component, and must be sufficiently different from other existing designs. In other words, the design must be “new”. Unlike a patent, a registered design offers no protection in relation to technical functionality – it only applies to an object’s external appearance.
Protect your design
Developing a design is expensive and time-consuming. So it is all the more important to protect your design from counterfeiters and plagiarists. If you are the owner of a design in one or more countries, you can forbid third parties in those countries from using products with a very similar or identical design for commercial purposes. In other words, you can prevent others from producing, offering, importing or exporting such products, or using them in any other commercial way.
